Orange wedges, weekly $5 bet and Patriot respect

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer take a look around the Las Vegas high school football scene. They give their picks for the upcoming week and discuss the merits of eating orange wedges on long gameday road trips.

One week after blowing a 20-point lead, the Sierra Vista High football team didn’t falter down the stretch Thursday night with a 14-0 victory against visiting Spring Valley.

Last week, the Mountain Lions were beating Clark 20-0 in the first half before losing 24-20.

“One of the things we stressed this week is how we are playing like we are afraid to win games,” Sierra Vista coach Mark Sauve said. “We told the kids they need to finish and to keep your foot on the pedal. That is what we did.”

Matt Murphy scored on a 20-yard pass from Taz Wilson for Sierra Vista’s first points, while sophomore Justin Green added a 3-yard touchdown run.

Defensively, Sauve said his defensive ends were the difference because they didn’t allow Spring Valley to establish its outside rushing attack.
