Doctor who pleaded guilty to concealing fraud regains full license

CARSON CITY – Dr. Mark Kabins, who pleaded guilty to concealing a fraudulent scheme in Las Vegas involving millions of dollars, has regained his full active and unrestricted medical license in Nevada.

The state Board of Medical Examiner has lifted the probationary status of Kabins’ license after he notified it he had completed his federal probation.

The examiners board placed Kabins’ state license on probation after he pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of misprision of felony, an offense in which a person knows of a crime and fails to notify authorities.

Kabins initially was accused of falsifying medical records and working with others to head off a medical malpractice suit by Melodie Simon, who became paralyzed after a back surgery in which he was one of the participating doctors.

In the federal penalty, the spine doctor was required to pay $3.5 million in restitution of Simon, a former Olympian. In addition to probation he was ordered to provide 250 hours of community service.

After the federal sentence, the medical board placed his license on probation, ordered him to pay $5,000 to charity, perform 500 hours of community service without getting paid, take a 24-hour course in ethics and reimburse the board $7,973 it had spent on the investigation.
