Gorman's national contest precedes Saturday slate

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Case Keefer and Ray Brewer go across the valley and break down the upcoming week of high school. They give their picks on every game and spend extra time debating Del Sol vs. Liberty and Servite (Calif.) vs. Bishop Gorman.

Aaron Love rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries Saturday night to lead the Green Valley High football team to a 45-28 victory against visiting Coronado.

The win is Green Valley’s fourth straight, improving its record to 3-0 in the Southeast Division. The Gators have missed the playoffs the last two years, making their terrific start in league play a surprise for some.

Just not first-year coach Brian Castro.

“I will be honest with you, I’m not real surprised,” Castro said. “I knew if the kids bought in that we would be successful. Well, the kids have definitely bought in.”

Quarterback Jacob Olim passed for 150 yards and two touchdowns, hooking up with David George and Tevis Labrador for scoring strikes. Also, Dimitri Santos had an interception return of about 55 yards for a touchdown.

Green Valley has a bye from league play next week and plays at 3A classification Virgin Valley. The following week, the team travels to Liberty to face the defending league and Sunrise Region champion Patriots.

“I’m not naïve enough to think the road ahead of us will be an easy one,” Castro said.
