DJK (Katherine Leigh) runs Texas Station’s Saturday Night Karaoke, and every week or so, she takes on a freelance gig. Two weeks ago, she co-DJed a karaoke competition at CityCenter’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
“This was a corporate function for financial investors,” DJK says, “and these investors take their karaoke very, very seriously. Basically, they plan for it all year.”
The investors flew in from England, India, Korea, China, Japan and Australia. And by the time they got here, they had costumes, props and choreography prepared.
“The Australians did Lady Gaga. Amazing choreography. And everyone dressed up in a different Gaga look—the mirror mask, the pleather—including the guys. But the Korean team won. They did this musical martial arts demonstration. They were actually breaking boards. I can’t even imagine what they’re going to come up with for next year.”
The 47-story hotel and condo tower is the first venture for Mandarin Oriental in Las Vegas. It is the only resort in Las Vegas that has a five-star hotel, a five-star restaurant and a five-star spa.
The tower has 392 guest rooms and 227 residences, decorated in a contemporary design with oriental touches.
Amenities include a 27,000-square-foot spa and a pool complex with 20 cabanas. Mandarin Oriental also includes six restaurants and bars, including Chef Pierre Gagnaire’s first U.S. restaurant, Twist.
Texas Station, modeled after the Lone Star State, is a AAA Three-Diamond rated hotel with 200 rooms, a casino, restaurants, bars and lounges, an entertainment showroom, a movie theater and a bowling center about six miles from the Las Vegas Strip.
It features 91,000 square feet of gaming space with more than 1,775 slots, 27 table games, a non-smoking poker room, a 500-seat bingo hall and a race and sports book.
The hotel has several dining options, from quick eateries to restaurants, including Austin's Steakhouse and Texas Star Oyster Bar. Some family-friendly features include an 18-screen movie theater and a bowling center.
South Padre provides live music weekly. The Dallas Events Center seats up to 2,000 people for concerts and other live performances.
