Sen. John Lee will run for reelection to the state Senate, easing the path state Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford's, D-North Las Vegas, path to Congress.

Lee, a North Las Vegas Democrat, said in a statement he wanted to avoid a "bitter" primary in the newly created 4th District. State Sen. Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas, has also announced she'll run for the seat.

Horsford issued a statement after Lee's announcement: "I've worked side by side with John Lee for the past eight years and he's a great public servant."

This will be chalked up as a victory for the Nevada State Democratic Party and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who have successfully avoided intra-party primary fights to keep resources aimed at general elections.

The party and Reid have been less successful, so far, in winnowing the 1st District field, where state Sen. Ruben Kihuen, D-Las Vegas, and former Rep. Dina Titus have both announced their candidacies.
