Letter to the editor:

Phone law isn’t making a dent

What if you passed a law and no one followed it?

The new cellphone law has been in effect for about six weeks now. When it went into effect, we heard stories about or saw people pulling over to make/take calls.

As I drive around the valley, I see no change in behavior due to this law. I still see so many drivers texting or emailing. It’s easy to tell who they are. They’re like the kids in class who were nodding off and suddenly came alert when the teacher called.

If the state put up signs informing the public of the law, I suspect they would have the same impact as speed limit signs: none. I can’t imagine the police have time to pull over many people for holding a cellphone.

Perhaps they will erect a roadblock, photograph everybody in line (who’ll all grab their phones the instant they stop), and then write a multitude of warnings. I can’t wait to see the new ads for ticket fixers: Getting pulled over for texting? Text us now at 666.
