Letter to the editor:

Changes necessary to make roads safe

The Sunday editorial on improving traffic safety points out the number of recent pedestrian deaths in crosswalks due to driver inattention, and demands some action. One suggestion would be to have drivers turn on their hazard warning flashing light when they have stopped for pedestrians to alert other drivers. This would be especially useful when a car is stopped before a crosswalk in the left turn lane, not knowing if it is waiting for coming traffic to clear or for a pedestrian who may be in front of the vehicle.

Having lived in five major cities, I have found that Las Vegas is the only one which has 45 mph speed limits on business streets. The pedestrian countdown signals also do not help because drivers speed up to make the light.
