U.S. Attorney reports collecting $85 million in criminal and court actions

The Nevada U.S. Attorney’s office announced Wednesday that it has collected $85 million related to criminal and court actions for the 2011 fiscal year in criminal fines, restitution, felony assessments and forfeitures.

“During this time of economic recovery, these collections are more important than ever,” said U.S. Attorney Bogden in the announcement. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office is dedicated to protecting the public and recovering funds for the federal treasury and for victims of federal crime. We will continue to hold accountable those who seek to profit from their illegal activities.”

The U.S. Attorney’s office is responsible for collecting criminal and civil debts to the U.S. government, as well as civil debts federal crime victims who have suffered physical injury or financial loss. Payments for civil actions account for $83 million of the money recovered by the Nevada U.S. Attorney’s office while criminal actions account for about $2 million. The office also collected $3.5 million in criminal and civil forfeitures.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s offices, the largest civil collections were from affirmative civil enforcement cases where government money lost to fraud and other misconduct was recovered.

This fiscal year $1.68 billion was collected in asset forfeiture actions and deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund and Department of Treasury Forfeiture Fund used to restore funds to crime victims and other law enforcement purposes.

Nationally the U.S. Attorneys’ offices collected $6.5 billion in criminal and civil actions for the 2011 fiscal year, with $1.3 billion collected in shared cases with other U.S. Attorneys’ offices, making the total amount more than three times the 2011 budget of all 94 offices.

The amount of money recovered for criminal and civil cases nationwide in U.S. Attorney’s office has reached $13 million, increasing almost 52 percent since 2008 and 2009 fiscal years.
