Letter to the editor:

Teaching quality is not the issue

In his column Tuesday, J. Patrick Coolican states that one of the challenges facing UNLV is that many of the students “received a mediocre education from the Clark County School District.” As a CCSD teacher, I take offense to his statement.

Each day, my colleagues and I present excellent lessons to our young charges. The problem is that students often put a mediocre amount of effort into their education, turning in assignments after the due date (if they even turn them in at all), not paying attention to material being presented and showing a general lack of interest in their studies. An excellent education is theirs for the taking, but many of them just choose not to take it.
