Letter to the editor:

Pedestrians must change mindset

With regard to the auto-versus-pedestrian fatalities in Las Vegas, I felt compelled to offer a suggestion. I just returned from a holiday in Asia. I was at a place where the pedestrian absolutely must give way to vehicles in traffic. Citizens are well aware that an oncoming car will not stop if they step into the roadway and very likely will strike the pedestrian.

America has long enjoyed the freedom of “pedestrian right of way” in traffic. Americans are in such a hurry and sometimes seem oblivious to conditions on the street around them.

Until traffic laws change, pedestrians should treat crossing the street with the attitude of, “Let the cars go first, then me.”
