A 26-year-old California man died after being struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Interstate 15 on foot this morning near the Las Vegas Strip, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The incident happened at 4:58 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway near Russell Road, authorities said.

Trooper Loy Hixson said two men were trying to cross the highway when a Jeep traveling in the southbound lanes struck one of them. The victim died after being taken to University Medical Center, he said.

The other man was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures, Hixson said.

The driver of the Jeep, who wasn't injured, had just left work when the accident occurred, Hixson said. She has not been cited.

It's unclear where the men were trying to go, but troopers believe their unfamiliarity with the area might have played a role in the incident, Hixson said.

The accident snarled traffic in the southbound lanes as troopers worked to clear the scene and investigate, but all lanes reopened at 7:30 a.m.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will identify the victim pending notification of his family.
