Authorities arrested a Las Vegas man today for alleged theft of home equity in connection with a mortgage loan, Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said.

Shafik Hirji, 53, was charged with three felony counts of forgery and a felony count of controlling property worth at least $2,500 belonging to another person with the intent of depriving that individual of the property. He was alleged to have fraudulently netted $101,606 in April 2007 in connection with a loan taken on property in Henderson.

“This incident is yet one more example of the significant criminal activity surrounding mortgage processing within Nevada,” Cortez Masto said. “Only by combating these criminal acts aggressively can we turn Nevada around, which is why my Mortgage Fraud Strike Force is dedicating all its resources to investigating and aggressively prosecuting these kinds of scams.”
