Bill prohibiting employment discrimination based on gender identity headed to governor

CARSON CITY — A bill to prohibit discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation is on its way to Gov. Brian Sandoval for his signature, and two other gender-identity bills have advanced in the Legislature.

The Assembly approved Senate amendments to AB 211 on Tuesday to prohibit discrimination in employment based on gender identity of expression.

Josh Miller, a member of the Human Rights Campaign, said it was a “great day for all residents of Nevada.” He urged Sandoval to sign the bill.

Miller called it a victory for civil rights. “The people of our state should be judged on the quality of the work they do and not on who they are,” he said.

The Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee on Wednesday unanimously and without debate approved two bills to prohibit discrimination in housing and public accommodations on the basis of gender.

The bills, SB 331 and SB 361, now move to the floor of the Assembly for a final vote.

Sandoval has not indicated whether he will sign the bills.

If they are approved, the Human Rights Campaign said, Nevada would become the 14th state, along with the District of Columbia, to provide protections based on gender identity or expression.
