Nevada Wonk

Bill Clinton endorses Chris Giunchigliani for Las Vegas mayor

Former President Bill Clinton is stumping for Las Vegas mayoral candidate Chris Giunchigliani, but mispronounces her name twice in the process.

Clinton voiced a robocall that began circulating Las Vegas households today. Instead of calling her "June-kill-ee-A-ni," the proper pronunciation, he calls her "June-kill-ee-OH-ni."

"I've known Chris for many years, and I can tell you with no hesitation she'll take Las Vegas in a positive direction that will bring jobs and revitalize the city neighborhood by neighborhood," Clinton says in the taped recording. "Chris Giunchigliani is an experienced leader. She'll spark the next exciting era for Las Vegas."

"It's a tough name to spell," Clinton adds. "But you can just look for the longest name on the ballot and cast your vote for Chris. It's a vote for your future."

The endorsement isn't surprising considering Giunchigliani, a Clark County Commissioner, is a long-time Clinton supporter. She endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in 2008 and served as co-chair of her Nevada campaign.

Carolyn Goodman also picked up an endorsement today, from Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony.

  1. Can I vote none of the above?

  2. If Kevin votes for "none of the above", can I vote for Chris twice?

  3. Carolyn Goodman says she's a consensus builder. I look at Chris' endorsement from President Clinton like this: Some people are enough of a "consensus builder" to build relationships with U.S. presidents. Others refuse to see them when they visit our city and change their political party affiliation in protest.

  4. It seems odd to me that Clinton would even bother with a mayor's race. Even so, maybe this will sway a few undecided voters and sink the Goodmans' sad attempt to hang onto power. I liked Oscar as mayor, but his wife running is purely a stunt.

  5. President Clinton shouldn't waste time endorsing anyone who resorts to negative campaigning.

  6. "If Kevin votes for "none of the above", can I vote for Chris twice?"

Marla, you know our politics are similar, if not identical, but I can't, in good conscience, vote for a "Democrat" who shamelessly and apologetically took tens of thousands of dollars from Sheldon Adelson. And said she would do it again.

Her volunteers post here all the time, but I've never gotten an answer to the question: did ChrisG accept money from Adelson for the mayoral race?

So... I'm sitting this one out.

  7. Las Vegas City Hall needs national recognition from powerful political figures. Oscar Goodman refused to meet with President Obama. I'm sure the president is thankful he is not in a photo with a known associate of organized crime. Bill Clintion can open many doors for the city of Las Vegas. Chris can make this happen for Las Vegas residents.

  8. I never vote for anyone I can not pronounce their name! The Clinton endorsement kind of seals the deal..
