Proposal to bring advertising to DMV offices advances

CARSON CITY – A plan by the state Department of Motor Vehicles to allow screens with advertising at its six regional offices has moved a step forward.

Department Director Bruce Breslow said it’s aimed at giving customers something to do while they're waiting in line.

The screens will have such things driving tips, recommended tire pressure information, weather reports and public services announcements, while 25 percent of the time would be devoted to the company that is sponsoring the program.

The joint Senate-Assembly budget committees Thursday approved the proposal, but Senate Bill 483 must be passed before the plan could go into effect. That bill is in the Senate Finance Committee.

Breslow said the state wouldn't make money off the plan. The department will seek proposals, choose one and have that company install and operate the screens, but the department would have the say on what is displayed.

Under existing law, advertising is prohibited in the state capitol and other state buildings or property. The bill says that if the DMV brings in money, it must be used to offset the cost of the program.
