LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Contradictory politicians are slowing progress

Oxymoron: a combination of contradictory or incongruous words. Although the following examples are not true oxymorons, they are indeed very contradictory in nature:

• There are those who want smaller government and a smaller budget along with higher employment numbers. Wouldn’t cutting jobs of government employees raise, rather than lower, the number of unemployed?

• There are those who want a smaller deficit, but they support the idea of the Treasury collecting less money through taxes. How would this help the government pay off the debt with less money coming in?

• Additionally, there are those who want to raise the age for collecting Social Security benefits, and want the unemployed to get back to work. As long as people are holding on to their jobs longer, doesn’t that make it more difficult for the unemployed to find jobs?

• And does it confuse anyone other than me when politicians tell the president what he should do, and when he does it, they complain that he did something wrong?

Doesn’t it seem like the federal government provides us with too many examples of contradictory actions and ideas? And I might include political factions that constantly remind Washington what should be done.

This all makes me feel that we the people are being taken for granted, that the politicians in Washington think that we have very short memories, but we don’t. We deserve better.
