Come to San Francisco for the sourdough, stay for the sourdough

San Francisco Sourdough Eatery

Weekly associate editor Ken Miller suggests the corned beef and turkey, but it is the bread that will have you going back.

First of all, ignore the Yelp page that places San Francisco Style Sourdough Eatery in Anthem. It’s off by roughly five miles. Actually, this sandwich shop—part of a Coeur d’Alene, Idaho-based chain—is just off the 215 at Paseo Verde and St. Rose Parkway. But even if you get a bit lost trying to find it, trust us—it’s worth the extra effort.

While it has plenty of competition at its price point, this place, which opened in September, has two things Port of Subs, Quiznos and Panera don’t—a truly unique sourdough bread and a “Famous Sourdough Spread” that gives each creation a burst of rich flavor.

Whether your sandwich is toasted or untoasted, the bread retains a crunchy/chewable quality unlike any sourdough I’ve ever tasted. They credit it to the bread being half-baked in the Bay area and then shipped out to stores. I strongly recommend the corned beef and turkey combo and the Sourdough, piled high with roast beef, ham and turkey, but there are also lots of veggie options, gourmet salads and soups, including—what else?—sourdough bread bowls filled with the soup of the day. One bowl is almost enough for two people, and at $6.75, that’s a steal.

There were a few disappointments: What, no cole slaw for the pastrami sandwich? No crushed pepper or parmesan for the pizzas? Sacrilege!—but that’s hardly cause to stay away. I wouldn’t recommend driving in from Summerlin to check it out, but if you’re already in Henderson, what are you waiting for?
