A man was shot during an apparent robbery attempt outside a bank near Sunset Park on Wednesday and Metro Police are searching for the gunman.

Metro Officer Laura Meltzer said police received a report about 4:30 p.m. indicating shots had been fired at the Wells Fargo Bank at the corner of Sunset Road and Eastern Avenue. When police responded, they found the victim, described only as an adult man, lying on his back outside the bank with gunshot wounds.

The victim, who was shot at least twice, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.

The gunman was described as being 5-feet-8 or 5-feet-9-inches tall, wearing dark clothing and a black ski mask. A white Dodge Stratus was found unoccupied nearby and Meltzer said police determined it had been driven to the area by the gunman.

Meltzer said the victim wasn't a bank employee and a robbery appeared to be the motive for the shooting.

Charell Williams, a bank customer, arrived to cash a check about 15 minutes after the shooting. Being a regular customer, Williams said, the incident worried him.

"What if I was here when it happened? What if it was me that just got some cash? You never freaking know," Williams said. "That’s where the scary part comes in. That it could have been you."

Sun reporter Rich Coleman contributed to this report.
