Registration open for inaugural Summerlin half marathon

The inaugural Summerlin Half Marathon is set for April 9. Registration is underway, and space is limited to the first 400 people who sign up.

Runners and walkers will depart from The Vistas Community Park at 7 a.m., traversing 13 miles through the 22,500-acre master-planned community before returning to the park.

The run, coordinated by Desert Sky Adventures, will take participants through seven Summerlin villages -- including The Vistas, The Arbors, The Crossing, The Trails, The Hills, The Hills South and The Canyons – along the community's 150-mile trail system.

The top male and female finishers in several age groups will be recognized, and all participants receive medals and shirts.

The idea for the half marathon stemmed from a nearly 10-mile community run that Summerlin held in 2009, said Summerlin President Kevin Orrock in a new release.

"The success of that event was the driving force behind organizing the Summerlin Half Marathon," Orrock said. "Summerlin is home to thousands of running enthusiasts who enjoy the opportunity to participate in organized runs in their own neighborhood."

Registration is $65. To register or view the course map, visit the run's website. For more information, call 702-526-7317.
