North Las Vegas firefighters to launch pool safety campaign

The North Las Vegas Fire Department will kick off a valley-wide public awareness campaign in April to promote pool safety.

The department, in partnership with the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition, will launch the door-to-door flier campaign Friday to coincide with April Pools Day. The door hangers contain information about pool safety and drowning prevention.

Campaign organizers say their goal is to eliminate child deaths due to drowning. Last year, one North Las Vegas child under the age of 4 drowned. In 2009, there were four drowning deaths of children under the age of 4.

Safe Kids Coalition, the Southern Nevada Health District and fire departments from Henderson, Clark County and Las Vegas are also participating in the campaign.

Funding was made possible in part by Leslie’s Pools and the local chapter of the International Code Council, which also donated grants to several city municipalities to fund free toddler swim programs for valley residents.

For more information, call North Las Vegas Fire Department Capt. Cedric Williams at 702-633-1111.
