Green Valley High School will host its 11th annual Empty Bowl benefit luncheon and auction on April 9 to help feed Las Vegans in need.

Each year since 2000, students and staff have partnered with the Nevada Clay Guild to create ceramic bowls for the live and silent Empty Bowl auctions to benefit the Las Vegas Catholic Worker soup kitchen.

“It’s a great pairing,” said Donna Potter, an art teacher who brought the national Empty Bowl event to Green Valley. “Clay-making is very down to earth and feeding the homeless is also a very down-to-earth, grassroots effort.”

Residents are invited to the school cafeteria, 460 Arroyo Grande Blvd., between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to choose a ceramic bowl and enjoy a luncheon of soup and bread.

About 2,300 bowls – the majority of them fire-kilned, a few hand-molded – will be showcased at the event.

There will be a washing station for the bowls, and attendees can choose between six soups to ladle into their bowl to eat.

Last year, the benefit raised $33,000 for the organization. This year, organizers hope to raise more than $35,000 for the charity.

“We have a large homeless population who go largely unnoticed, especially in Green Valley, because many of them live in downtown,” Potter said. “We’re really excited this year since the economy has turned around a little. I hope to have more people (come to the event) this year.”

Tickets to the event cost $15 for adults, and $12 for children 12 years old and under. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance by visiting www.lvcw.org.
