The 25-year-old Las Vegas man killed in a car accident in the northeast valley on Monday has been identified as Jose Arevalo Cruz, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office.

Police said the accident, which involved a vehicle striking a pole, happened about 6:50 a.m. near Nellis Boulevard and Stanley Avenue.

A preliminary investigation indicates a Honda Civic was traveling south on Nellis Boulevard in the left lane when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and went off the road to the west, striking a pole with the passenger's side of the car, officials said.

Cruz, the passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver, 22-year-old Francisco Lopez-Zepada, was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with serious injuries.

This marked the 16th fatal traffic accident in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
