Upgraded medians along Rampart Boulevard to debut today

Median project

Las Vegas officials on Wednesday will officially unveil improved medians on Rampart Boulevard.

The city spent $100,000 from room tax revenue to improve six medians on Rampart near Del Webb Boulevard, between Cheyenne Avenue and Lake Mead Boulevard.

The project includes landscaping and 24 metal sculptures of cacti and other plants created by local welder Michael Dunn, a city employee.

“The response from residents to the improvement of the median islands on Rampart Boulevard has been so positive,” City Councilman Stavros Anthony said. “We have received many phone calls complimenting the work and particularly expressing admiration for the attractive metal sculptures. The enhancements are really quite striking.”

Anthony will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony for the project at 10 a.m. Wednesday, ending lane closures on the road that have slowed traffic for the past month.

Combined, the beautified medians run for nearly 1.5 miles, city officials said, with more than 100,000 square feet of improved area. About 700 tons of landscaping rock and 165 boulders, weighing a total of 42 tons, were installed.

The city's operations and maintenance staff performed all of the work on the project except the boulder placement.
