Storm system prompts wind advisory in Las Vegas, brings chance of rain

The next few days will be breezy and cool in Las Vegas, prompting forecasters this morning to issue a wind advisory for the region in effect through tonight.

The National Weather Service said a strong Pacific storm slowly moving south along the west coast will bring strong gusty winds over the region today and Sunday. A wind advisory is posted through 11 p.m. tonight for a large area that stretches from California to Utah, including nearly all of Southern Nevada.

Forecasters said the high temperature in Las Vegas today will reach about 68 degrees with winds of 14 to 24 mph gusting to 33 mph.

Gusts up to 50 mph are possible in some parts of the region, with gusts exceeding 60 mph in mountains above 7,000 feet. The strongest winds will be in the mountains and near the foothills of east- to northeast-facing slopes, forecasters said.

The weather service warned that crosswinds could make driving dangerous in some areas, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Gusty winds are expected again Sunday with the high reaching 64 degrees. A 70 percent chance of rain is in the forecast late Sunday through Monday.

Highs in the 60s are in the forecast until Thursday, when forecasters said temperatures could rebound to the low 70s.
