An Assembly bill aimed at boosting voter turnout in municipal elections would allow cities to change their charters to hold election in even-numbered years to coincide with state elections.
Voter turnout in some city elections in Southern Nevada has been abysmal, said Las Vegas Assemblyman Tick Segerblom, who is pushing AB-132. Turnout has bottomed out as low as 11, 12 and 15 percent in some municipal elections.
The change would also save an estimated $1 million in election costs in Southern Nevada if cities opted to run their elections in conjunction with state elections, Segerblom said.
Liane Lee, lobbyist for the city of Las Vegas, which is holding its municipal elections this year, said the City Council would like to discuss the issue. No one spoke in opposition.
