Elizondo Elementary named fifth school to face reorganization

Elizondo Elementary School

Clark County School District officials announced Thursday that Elizondo Elementary School, 4865 Goldfield St. in North Las Vegas, will be the fifth school to be reorganized next year under a federal stimulus grant program.

District officials Wednesday outlined the plan to reorganize four other schools: Chaparral High School, Mojave High School, Western High School and Hancock Elementary.

The plan calls for the removal of principals who have served at the schools for more than three years, along with all of the schools’ teachers. The teachers will then be able to reapply for their positions and up to 50 percent can be rehired.

The other displaced principals and teachers will be able to apply for jobs at other schools.

The program is part of a School Improvement Grant that Nevada received as part of the federal stimulus act. The district must apply for the funds from the state by March 18.

Students at Chaparral held a protest against the plan after school ended Wednesday, followed by a second protest Thursday outside the school board’s afternoon meeting.

District officials have scheduled a Friday morning news conference to discuss more details about the school restructuring plans.
