LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Cell phones aren’t only distractions when driving

I believe that cell phone use while driving should be made illegal. It is dangerous for everyone on the road.

My fingers are crossed that the law will change soon.

In the meantime, I am amazed at another dangerous behavior I see on the road.

The other day I was driving home from dropping my daughter off at school. At a busy intersection, another driver was struggling to make a left turn while a cute little dog on her lap was squirming and trying to climb up over her left shoulder into the back seat.

At one point neither hand was on the wheel and I would assume neither eye was on the road, yet her car was moving! This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this.

Most times the pet looks calm and content, but that could change instantly. The pet has a will of its own.

If your cell phone rings, you can ignore it. If your pet is suddenly blocking your vision or jumps down at your feet and in the way of the brakes or gas, it could be catastrophic. At this point, I would rather she was talking on her cell phone. At least she can control it or just set it down if she chooses.

People really need to consider how their decisions can have tragic consequences.
