LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

U.S. foreign aid is small, yet vital, part of the budget

Regarding Robert Blanner’s Friday letter to the editor, headlined “Foreign aid shouldn’t be a sacred cow”:

I agree with Mr. Blanner’s main point that there are better places to cut our budget than by “taking away money from our seniors and poor,” but foreign aid isn’t one of those places.

Foreign aid comprises less than 1 percent of our country’s spending, and if it’s hard to think of that minuscule amount as an altruistic-American-values help to the poor and needy of the world, think of it as a very inexpensive way to buy influence, a bit of friendship and greater peace for our citizens, at home and abroad, than we might otherwise enjoy.

In short, it is money well spent.
