The Clark County Coroner's Office has identified a man fatally shot by a Metro Police officer Tuesday night after authorities say he pointed a handgun at the officer inside a tavern.

Mauricio Hernandez, 23, of Las Vegas, died at the scene. The coroner hasn't officially ruled on his cause and manner of death.

The shooting happened about 8:50 p.m. at The Bar, 1987 N. Nellis Blvd., police said.

Metro Capt. Patrick Neville said that when the officer walked into the bar, Hernandez pulled out the gun, racked the slide and pointed it at the officer. The officer pulled his gun and fired at least one round, Neville said.

It was not clear whether Hernandez fired his weapon, police said.

Police said they don't know if the incident is related to another shooting in the same area about 7:30 p.m. that evening.

In that case, a man whose wife said he was taking out the trash was shot in his garage in the 4300 block of Stockbridge Street, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Lamb Boulevard, police said.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation. His name will be released after 48 hours.
