Bill on lobbyist spending on legislators introduced

CARSON CITY – A bill to require lobbyists to report the money they spend wining and dining legislators during the off-session time has been introduced in the Senate.

Sen. Sheila Leslie, D-Reno, said this was a “sunshine” measure. Lobbyists during the legislative session have to report what lawmakers they are spending money on.

Leslie wants to extend that to year-round. The measure, Senate Bill 206, would require quarterly reports. She said it wouldn't prohibit any behavior but it makes government more transparent.

There are 689 people who have registered as lobbyists for the current session of the Legislature. Of that number, 570 are paid lobbyists and 179 are not paid.

They have paid $151,000 in fees so far.

There were 900 lobbyists registered at the 2009 Legislature, but Legislative Counsel Director Lorne Malkiewich said more will be signing up as this session progresses.
