Governor nixes federal health care reform study

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval has nixed a legislative study on how President Obama’s health care plan will fit into Nevada’s medical system.

The governor noted the state has joined in a suit seeking to invalidate the federal law, but he said it was prudent for the state to get ready for the plan if the suit fails.

There are two health care reform teams in the state Department of Health and Human Services already starting a study. Sandoval said creating a legislative study committee would be “unnecessary and duplicative.”

The governor vetoed Senate Bill 418, which would have created a three-member subcommittee to oversee the implementation of the federal health care reform act.

The governor also disapproved of Senate Bill 115, which would have required certain hospitals and doctors to accept a discounted rate from health insurance policies for emergency care treatment.

He said he rejected the bill because it “interferes with contracting between third party players, hospital and health care providers…”
