Careless smoking was blamed for a house fire that caused about $275,000 in damage Monday evening and left three people displaced from their northwest valley home.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded at 7:14 p.m. to the home at 4205 Robins Ridge Drive, near the Las Vegas Beltway and Alexander Road. Officials said a fire that started in the garage, destroying two vehicles, had spread to the front of the house and through the interior of the home.

Two people inside heard loud noises coming from the garage, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. They opened the garage door and discovered heavy flames and smoke, then a man returned with a fire extinguisher, but the thick smoke forced him out of the house, investigators said.

The occupants of the home and their pets escaped without injuries.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in less than 10 minutes. Szymanski said smoke was visible up to 10 miles away.

The three family members are being provided assistance by the American Red Cross and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Foundation.
