News helicopter helps police capture suspected pharmacy burglar after traffic mishap

Updated Friday, July 29, 2011 | 1:40 p.m.

A man suspected of breaking into a pharmacy learned three crucial lessons this morning: Don't let witnesses spot you, and when you take off in a panic and then park your car at your girlfriend's house, don't forget to set the parking brake. And one more thing: don't let a news helicopter see you.

Which explains why the house is missing a front pillar this morning.

James Robert Kennedy, 35, has now been charged with burglary and possession of stolen property after he fled from the drug store and was later captured by police.

Metro Police say the episode started unfolding around 5:40 a.m. when a passerby saw a man attempting to break into a closed pharmacy on the 2400 block of East Tropicana Avenue. The witness called police as the suspect was getting into his silver Chevy truck.

Metro Lt. James Weiskopf said when officers arrived in the area, the man fled to the 3000 block of Painted Hills Street, where his girlfriend lives.

"He jumped out in order to hide and failed to put the vehicle in park," Weiskopf said.

His truck hit the front pillar of the home and he ran. Police credit the KTNV Channel 13 news helicopter with helping them locate Kennedy, who was hiding in a shed nearby.

There were no injuries and Kennedy has been booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
