HopeLink seeks donations of clothing for back-to-school drive

With the start of the school year fast approaching, HopeLink of Southern Nevada is asking the community for help in providing clothes and shoes to the valley's needy children.

The Henderson non-profit is aiming to provide 1,000 school-aged children with a complete back-to-school outfit including pants, a shirt, shoes, socks and underwear.

"Many of these children have never had the luxury of wearing something new,” HopeLink of Southern Nevada executive director Daniele Dreitzer said in a statement. “They might have shirts that don’t fit or shoes in a size too small, and as a result can have a hard time focusing on their school work because they are insecure about what they are wearing. "

Community members are encouraged to "adopt" a student by calling HopeLink at 702-566-0576 or visiting their website.

New outfits can be dropped off at various community locations through Aug. 12 or at the Old Navy at Town Square, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South, through Aug. 5.

The donated items will be distributed to children from struggling families during HopeLink's 10th annual "Back 2 School Celebration" on Aug. 20 at Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. in Henderson. Children also will receive a backpack filled with school supplies from Central Christian Church.

Parents wishing for their children to receive an outfit must register in advance and should call HopeLink at 702-566-0576.
