High court upholds Las Vegas death penalty case

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Supreme Court Friday rejected the appeal of Antoine L. Williams, who was convicted in 1995 for the murder of an elderly Las Vegas couple and for taking items from their home to finance a drug habit.

Williams was sentenced to death for the strangulation of William and Alice Nail in their home. The court upheld the decision of District Judge Stefany Miley in declining to grant a new trial. It said a motion for a new trial must be filed within seven days after the verdict unless there is newly-discovered evidence.

Williams was initially sentenced to death but the Supreme Court ordered a new penalty hearing. He was also sentenced to death at the subsequent hearing.

According to court documents, Williams went to the Nail home to borrow money for drugs. When the husband refused, Williams strangled him with an electric cord. He then strangled and stabbed Alice in the neck.

Williams took a VCR, jewelry and credit cards from the home. He was later arrested while driving in a stolen car of another person.
