Facebook launches state Amber Alert pages

The search for missing children has expanded to social network giant Facebook through a new partnership with the nationwide Amber Alert system.

Facebook last week unveiled Amber Alert pages for every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and several Canadian provinces to help spread information about missing children.

The Amber Alert pages work like any other fan page on the social network: Facebook users only will see updates in their news feeds if they “like” a particular Amber Alert page, law enforcement officials said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 1,800 people had signed up for — or “liked” — the Nevada Amber Alert page.

Officials from Facebook, the Justice Department and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children made the announcement last Wednesday, the day before the 15th anniversary of the kidnapping and murder of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, the namesake of the alert system that’s credited with helping find 525 missing children.
