Starbucks hopes Nevadans can digest new 31-ounce drink

The city of excess just got a little more excessive, thanks to Starbucks' new nearly quart-sized cup.

The coffee shop chain launched its 31-ounce Trenta cup in 14 states Tuesday, including Nevada. Now, Las Vegas Valley residents will be able to enjoy their favorite iced coffees and teas in a size larger than most human stomachs.

The Starbucks Corp. says the Trenta, which means "thirty" in Italian, will cost about 50 cents more than its former king cup, the 20-ounce Venti.

California residents will find the bladder-busting Trenta in stores Feb. 1 and the nationwide rollout should be complete by May 3.

But in reality, the new Trenta is a small fish in our supersized world. McDonald’s largest sized beverage is 32 ounces (it phased out its 42-ounce drink in 2006), 7-11’s Double Gulp is more than double the size of the Trenta at 64 ounces, and a 40-ounce beer is, well, 40 ounces. The new cup hardly compares to the yard-long margaritas tourists clutch on the Strip.

The Trenta will only be available for cold beverages, and face it, once they fill the cup with ice, it’s almost like ordering a small, err, tall anyway.
