Las Vegas sees record heat as high hits 74 degrees

Today's weather proved to be a record-breaking treat for residents of the Las Vegas Valley: The temperature climbed to 74 degrees this afternoon, surpassing the 72-degree record set in 1976 on today's date.

The mercury inched up to 72 degrees by 2 p.m. today at McCarran International Airport before breaking the record within the next hour, according to the National Weather Service. By 3 p.m., the temperature had dipped back down to 73, forecasters said.

Las Vegas hit the 60s after 9 a.m., heating up to 70 degrees by noon, forecasters said.

A high pressure system situated off the coast of Southern California is bringing the dry and mild conditions to Southern Nevada, the Weather Service reported.

The average high temperature for today's date in Las Vegas is 57 degrees, while the average low is 37 degrees.

The coldest low temperature on record for today's date in Las Vegas is 20 degrees, set in 1949.
