A 16-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition Monday evening after he was hit by a car near Durango Drive and Warm Springs Road in the southwest valley, Metro Police said.

Sergio Chiappe, 37, was driving a 2004 Hyundai Sonata west about 6 p.m. on Arby Avenue east of Garden Pond Street when the boy, while already standing in the travel lane, stepped into the car’s path and was struck by the Sonata, investigators said.

He was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with life-threatening injuries, police said. Authorities didn't release the boy's name because of his age.

The collision remains under investigation.
