LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Is smaller government really wanted?

Regarding Robert Gardner’s Thursday letter to the editor, headlined “Voters have said they don’t want big government”:

Every dime the government spends goes into someone’s pocket. The vast majority of federal government expenditures go for programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the veterans system as well as national security. I haven’t seen any indication that Americans are willing to give up any of these things.

When seniors line up and advocate the elimination of Social Security and Medicare, and when the sick line up and advocate the elimination of Medicaid, then I will believe that Americans are for smaller government.

Americans are paying lip service to advocating a smaller government. But they are doing nothing to actually make it smaller, and they are not going to. The above programs are as much a part of America as mom and apple pie.
