LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Congress needs to be encouraged to make budget cuts

My New Year’s resolution is to research our mounting federal deficit to the point that I can write informed letters to the editor, comments on blogs, websites, social networking sites, texts, and make informed comments in telephone and face-to-face conversations.

The New York Times’ Thomas Friedman, in his column published in Tuesday’s Las Vegas Sun — “New beginning: Cut here, invest there” — described how Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is talking the talk.

Friedman notes, for example, that Reed negotiated with union picketers to cut pensions for new employees and to raise vesting periods. In one year, Atlanta’s budget reserves went from $7.4 million to $58 million. Reed was then able to “invest,” reopening 16 recreational centers in Atlanta’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Local businesses followed suit by offering after-school job-skills programs in the centers. Friedman’s point is that America needs growth and “investing” to stay strong, but not at the expense of a bigger deficit.

Congressmen have the most resources to determine the best ways to cut the deficit. I am going to type a short e-mail, asking my Nevada members of Congress to give priority to cutting the deficit. If you agree, please join me.
