Seventh- and eighth-graders at R.O. Gibson Middle School are inviting the community to their school's gymnasium on Saturday to take part in their pet adoption event.

Five rescue agencies are scheduled to be in attendance from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., said Principal Linda Archambault, with dogs and cats available for adoption. It is part of the school's leadership magnet program, in which about 140 students organize their own event to benefit the community.

It started a few months ago when a stray dog "literally walked right into a classroom," Archambault said. Once the kids found out that dogs who are not adopted after a certain period of time are usually euthanized, they started "having a conservation about what they could do about it," she said.

"The kids have realized they can be empowered to make a difference," Archambault said. "It comes from the heart."
