LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Teachers’ work makes community a better place

Regarding Brian Greenspun’s Feb. 13 column, “Status quo isn’t good enough anymore”:

Thanks to Mr. Greenspun for his support of education.

So many people are ignorant of what teachers do. They blame us for everything, calling us goofs, cheats, thieves and everything else. Yes, as it is in other professions, there are teachers who shouldn’t be teaching. There are, however, many of us who work very hard.

We are surrogate parents, friends, mentors and advocates. We are teaching because we love what we do, regardless of what many think.

To many students, we are their last hope for salvation — not their parents, not the community.

Mr. Greenspun is right that there is a dearth of leadership in this state. It appears that no one takes a stand for what is right anymore.

I will remain a teacher for as long as I can, even if I have to get another job to survive, because I also believe that education is the only hope for a better world.
