Popular frozen dessert chain Tasti D-Lite expands to Town Square

Beyond the Sun

More than 20 years after it debuted on the streets of New York, cult favorite Tasti D-Lite has arrived in Las Vegas. The chain, which offers a low-calorie alternative to ice cream and was made famous by its appearance on HBO's "Sex and the City," plans to open its second store in the valley in March at Town Square.

More than a dozen stores are poised to open in the valley, said Aliza Elazar-Higuchi, its owner and operator. The first store opened in November on the Las Vegas Strip.

Tasti D-Lite is on track to move in next to IT'SUGAR, across from The Yardhouse. After the Enterprise Town Board gave its recommendation for approval at the end of January, all that remains is a final vote from the Clark County Commission. The board is scheduled to vote Feb. 16.

The store will serve the brand's signature dessert, similar in texture to ice cream, in its trademark blue cups, Elazar-Higuchi said. Customers can browse more than 100 flavors with exotic names such as as Mango Dream, Mud Pie, Orange Cremesicle and Pineapple Cheesecake, all sold in servings of 100 calories or less.

Elazar-Higuchi has signed on to open at least 15 locations in Clark County in the next few years, she said. The first, a self-serve store, opened in November across from the Monte Carlo on Las Vegas Boulevard.

An entrepreneur with ownership in more than 20 retail stores in Las Vegas Valley, Elazar-Higuichi said that her experience and Tasti D-Lite's brand-name gives her confidence about the venture.

"I was drawn to Tasti-D-Lite because of its great taste, superior reputation and lower calorie count," she said. "I see tremendous potential for growth."

The move is part of the company's broader expansion plans, which began in 2008. Tasti D-Lite is poised to open more than 350 locations in the coming years, the company said in a news release, and expanding to the rest of the world with locations already open in Mexico and South Korea.
