Juvenile diabetes symposium scheduled for Feb. 26

Registration is open for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's first Hope and Health Symposium.

Feb. 18 is the last day to register.

The conference, scheduled for Feb. 26 at Rancho High School, is designed for adults and children with insulin-dependent diabetes, providing "a well-rounded day of information and things they can take home and use," said Marcela Arroyave, the JDRF's outreach coordinator in Nevada.

Admission is free, but registration is required. To register, visit the organization's website.

Kids' Zone Sessions will be offered throughout the day for the young attendees, ages 5 to 14, where kids will participate in games, arts and crafts and diabetes education.

For the adults, the morning will open with the program's keynote speakers, which will include Gary Hall, a three-time Olympic medal winner with Type I diabetes. After a complimentary lunch, guests can choose to attend two of eight "breakout sessions" that will discuss a variety of issues such as how to manage the disease, new and upcoming treatments, the latest research and more.

"We all live very fast-paced lives, and sometimes, it's hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle," Arroyave said.

With thousands in the valley dealing with diabetes, Arroyave said the JDRF was confident it would see a strong turnout later this month. And if so, she said the group would like to make the symposium an annual event.

The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation, Jump for Joy, Create A Change Now and a number of local physicians partnered with the JDRF to put on the conference, Arroyave said.

Rancho High School is located at 1900 Searles Ave.
