Metro Police plan DUI checkpoint for Super Bowl Sunday

Metro Police said a northwest valley intersection with a high number of drunken-driving arrests and traffic accidents will be the site of a sobriety checkpoint on Super Bowl Sunday.

Authorities will be conducting the checkpoint near Cheyenne Avenue and Tenaya Way, an area that saw 26 drunken-driving arrests and 146 accidents last year, officials said.

The checkpoint, partially funded by a grant, will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday and continue until 3 a.m. Monday.

Seven percent of all traffic accidents involve alcohol use, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As part of the Joining Forces program, the Nevada Highway Patrol will also work with Henderson and Metro police to step up drunken-driving enforcements before the Super Bowl's kickoff.

Police plan saturation patrols on several unidentified Henderson streets from 6 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday.

Officials urge motorists to make plans ahead of time for a designated driver, alternative transportation or spending the night somewhere if they plan to drink alcohol at Super Bowl or weekend events.
