There are plenty of NYE Strip alternatives

Remember — kissing is romantic on New Year’s Eve, whether it’s on the Strip or on the Fremont Street Experience.

One time I went to the Strip on New Year’s Eve, and one time was enough. My parents almost got crushed outside O’Sheas, and it took us 90 minutes to get to our car and get out of the parking garage. So if you’re like me and you’re looking for something else to do this NYE, consider the following:

TributePalooza 4 on Fremont Street What if I told you that you could see Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Rolling Stones on New Year’s Eve? Well guess what: You can’t. But how about the next best thing? Led Zepagain, Red Not Chili Peppers and Rolling the Stones. First show begins at 6:15 p.m. (Fan Halen) and the last one starts at 1:10 a.m. (Red Not) Fremont Street Experience, 386-8100, $30.

Lake Las Vegas Fireworks This is how the rest of the country does fireworks: at a lake. This year, Lake Las Vegas is offering up two different shows—one at the Village, the other at Loews Resort. If you find a seat in the middle of the Village, you’ll be able to see both. Pretty soon, you won’t feel bad about skipping the Strip on July 4, either.

Live Music at the Royal House Twelve hours of music. Local musicians. The Gingerbread Boys, Dude City, Hot Carl 3, DJBJ, John Doe, 8-Bits, and Phoreyz. If you’re hip enough to know who those guys are—I’m not—you’ll definitely have a great time. 99 Convention Center Dr., 6-8 p.m., free; after 8 p.m., $49.

New Year’s Eve “Fun” Run I added those quotes myself. But if running an “almost 8K” is your idea of a good time, you’ll be happy to hear that Desert Dash has “a random assortment of prizes left over that [they’d] like to get rid of, as well as a smattering of leftover Desert Dash shirts, socks, beanies and miscellaneous medals (or woodles, as [they] fondly call them) from previous races.” Run the night race and claim your woodles this NYE. Bootleg Canyon, desertdash.com, 6 p.m.

Laser Quest Overnighter Solo games, team games, elimination games, even role-playing games—$40 buys you seven hours of laser tag ($35 if you prepay). There’ll be a break at 11:50 p.m. for party hats, noisemakers and apple cider, then at midnight, it’s game (back) on. Remember: No covering your sensors—that’s cheating. And no running! Laser Quest Las Vegas, 7361 W. Lake Mead Blvd., Suite 100, 243-8881.
