Thousand of Nevadans to continue to get their unemployment checks

CARSON CITY – More than 10,000 jobless Nevadans would have lost their unemployment checks if Congress had failed to act.

The average payment in Nevada is $302 a week.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said there are 9,000 persons drawing the extended 99 week benefit package. All 9,000 would have been cut off on Jan.7 if the Senate and House didn’t agree on the tax cut issue.

The House accepted the Senate bill Thursday to extend the payments at least for two more months.

There are 39,000 individuals receiving checks under other extended benefit plans. Benefits would be eliminated each week for an estimated 2,800 jobless receiving checks under these programs if the deadlock continued.

The state has its regular 26 weeks of benefits. Those who had reached that deadline would have been unable to continue on the federal programs. The department says 1,000 to 1,500 would have been dropped off the state program and not been able to receive the extended benefits.

There were an estimated 171,800 unemployed in November. The 13 percent is the highest among the states.
