Letter to the editor:

Let’s raise rates on junk mail

We are being presented with information that the U.S. Postal Service is having major problems in balancing their income with their expenses. Hey, join the crowd.

They are considering plans that will help them balance it out while reducing the service we have become accustomed to. A number of post offices will close. We can forget about next-day deliveries. Maybe put an end to Saturday deliveries.

While most of us will be able to adjust to those changes, I find something conspicuous by its absence. I do not read anything about raising the rates for those companies who fill our mail boxes with junk mail. Why are they considered sacred? Most of this slow mail spam ends up in our recycle bins. It would seem that raising the rates on this type of mail would help the post office in balancing its budget so that fewer drastic steps might be necessary.

The men and women we see every day in the delivery trucks and at the post office are not the problem. We can be thankful for them. But somewhere in the nation’s capital there are those who are not looking at the big picture.
