Freeze watch issued for early Sunday morning for Las Vegas

Temperatures could dip below 32 degrees for several hours after midnight, forecasters say

If you have tender outdoor plants, animals you keep outdoors or exposed water pipes, you might want to protect them tonight — a freeze watch has been issued for early Sunday morning for the Las Vegas Valley, says Kevin Janison, KSNV-TV meteorologist.

"The big chill continues," Janison said. "Two more weather disturbances are planning to solidify our cold air mass and kick up the winds again in the valley."

The latest round will increase the winds today and offer up another chance for some light rain and snow flurries, although most of the precipitation will remain east of Las Vegas, Janison said.

"Expect gusts to exceed 30 mph, and sustained winds to remain between 10-25 mph," he said.

Those winds will barely have a chance to relax before a second disturbance winds them up again on Sunday night and Monday, he said.

"High temps will struggle to reach 50 degrees this weekend," he said. "The overnight lows will be a more significant story."

This morning's temperatures will bottom out near 40 degrees, he said.

"But, with the parade of cold fronts, Sunday morning through much of the week will see official lows near 35 degrees at McCarran," he said.

"On those nights, when the winds calm and clouds have cleared, some neighborhoods around the edges of town could flirt with the first freeze of the season," he said.

The National Weather Service said lows of 27 to 32 degrees are possible across much of the Las Vegas Valley, with five to six hours of temperatures below freezing from after midnight tonight through early Sunday morning.

The freeze watch area includes Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Summerlin, Nellis Air Force Base, Mountain's Edge, Seven Hills and Blue Diamond.

According to the weather service, this morning’s expected low at McCarran International Airport, 40 degrees, is the normal low for today's date. The record low was 23 degrees, set in 1948.

Temperatures at McCarran were to rise today to 44 degrees by 9 a.m., to 48 degrees by noon and reach a high of 50 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 59 degrees and the record high was 77 degrees, set in 1980.

Temperatures at McCarran are expected to drop to 46 degrees by 6 p.m., to 41 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 38 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Sunday's morning low at McCarran will be 35 degrees and Sunday's high will climb to 58 degrees, they said.
